Dharam Vir: The unsung hero of famous 'Battle of Longewala'
India and Pakistan had formally entered into a war by December 3, 1971, after months of escalating tensions over the situation in East Pakistan. Indian Army soldiers and Indian Air Force officers manning the western front in the Thar were alerted. One hundred and twenty soldiers of the battalion of 23 Punjab regiment, to which Vir belonged, had been stationed at the Longewala border post for months in anticipation of war. As soon as news of the declaration of war reached them, Major Kuldip Chandpuri (played by Sunny Deol in the film), pressed the men into action.
