Born in Boston, Massachusetts on Dec. 21, 1956, she grew up in Moraga, California and graduated from Miramonte High School in 1975, where she was a member of the marching band. She later earned a master's degree in Speech Pathology & Audiology from California State University, Chico. Holly married James Baumgartner in 1983.
