Community members united to demand that big music festivals leave Douglass Park, which links Little Village and Lawndale.
After months of pushback from community members concerned about megafestivals taking over a neighborhood park, the Chicago Park District is implementing changes to the permitting process.
The latest damage comes after the park has been used for three massive Chicago festivals this summer: Summer Smash in June, Heatwave in July and Riot Fest this past weekend. Riot Fest alone brings some 40,000 attendees to the park each day.
The park district should have a sit-down with the community about the frequency and size of music events and reach an arrangement that benefits residents.
After a heated community meeting, neighborhood groups are calling for artists to drop out of the weekend music festival as they continue to push for changes to how the West Side park is used.
