Covid care in satellite facilities sans hospitalisation Kolkata specialists highlight ways to optimise infrastructure in State while reducing strain on healthcare system Even as a second wave of infections rampages through the State, severely stretching private and state-owned healthcare systems, city-based doctors and specialists suggest that there are a large number of mildly symptomatic Covid patients who can be treated at home or in satellite facilities without requiring hospitalisation. Such numbers are at 20-33 per cent as per estimates of doctors and medical practitioners. Kolkata has over 2,50,000 active Covid cases while the State has over 1,10,000 infections as on April 30. Over 17,000 fresh cases have been added each day over the last few days. The total hospital beds (including satellite facilities) in private hospitals is 5,900 while State government-run hospitals have close to 9,700 beds (include stadiums and other requisitioned facilities). ....

He came across ‘Support Elders’, a service for the elderly, and was hooked when he got to know that some of the teams involved with Support elders have ex-servicemen. He says, “It’s great for elderly people like me. They (member care associates) come meet me every Thursday every week and enquire about my welfare and other things. I have the assurance that there is always somebody in the background, looking after me all the time. In case of distress, I’m sure that I will get help immediately (via alarm system in the wearable device).” He adds that the GPS system, another addition to the wearable device is not only so family members can know his location, it’s also great that the emergency team can reach him anywhere, anytime. ....
