ISWAN launches vaccination drive for Indian seafarers | Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

ISWAN launches vaccination drive for Indian seafarers
In response to the second wave of COVID-19 in India, the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has launched a ‘Vaccination Drive for Indian Seafarers’ in collaboration with Narayana Health and the Medica Group of Hospitals.
Over the last few weeks, ISWAN’s international helpline SeafarerHelp has received a significant number of calls from Indian seafarers who have shared the various challenges they and their families are facing in India due to the disastrous impact of the second wave of COVID-19. Indian seafarers have reported being unable to join vessels as they could not get vaccinated, which has resulted in increased hardship for the seafarers and their families and worries that they may lose their jobs. ....

ISWAN launches vaccination scheme for Indian seafarers in rare humanitarian feat

Few organisations have been able to obtain vaccines from pharmaceutical companies in recent months, outside national governments and supranational institutions.
Earlier this year, the International Chamber of Shipping was looking to buy up to one million vaccine jabs via the Covax programme, co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO). But it failed to make inroads.
Chirag Bahri, ISWAN’s director of regions (India), said his organisation pulled off the trick by working with the private hospitals that procured vaccines directly from local manufacturers in India.
“It is our duty to keep exploring possibilities in ways we can try to assist our seafarers and their families undergoing tremendous hardships due to the Covid-19 situation in the country, which is unimaginable,” he said. ....

Covid-19: Calcutta's private hospitals put their best foot forward

The Covid situation in Calcutta is more than overwhelming.
A maximum number of posts on social media are either about someone looking for urgent oxygen supply, crucial medicines or someone feeling helpless due to an acute shortage of hospital beds. On Friday, Bengal recorded the highest single-day spike of 19, 216 Covid cases.
As we battle the ongoing Covid crisis, both individually and collectively, private hospitals in Kolkata are putting their best foot forward.
Desun Hospital has taken the initiative to set up satellite centres to treat mild and asymptomatic patients. “Our initiative aims to provide a 24x7 medical care facility to help such patients recover under the guidance of Desun’s medical team while under isolation treatment in a safe, home-like environment,” a spokesperson from the hospital said. ....

Covid care in satellite facilities sans hospitalisation - The Hindu BusinessLine

Covid care in satellite facilities sans hospitalisation
Kolkata specialists highlight ways to optimise infrastructure in State while reducing strain on healthcare system
Even as a second wave of infections rampages through the State, severely stretching private and state-owned healthcare systems, city-based doctors and specialists suggest that there are a large number of mildly symptomatic Covid patients who can be treated at home or in satellite facilities without requiring hospitalisation.
Such numbers are at 20-33 per cent as per estimates of doctors and medical practitioners.
Kolkata has over 2,50,000 active Covid cases while the State has over 1,10,000 infections as on April 30. Over 17,000 fresh cases have been added each day over the last few days. The total hospital beds (including satellite facilities) in private hospitals is 5,900 while State government-run hospitals have close to 9,700 beds (include stadiums and other requisitioned facilities). ....

Coronavirus cases in Kolkata: Every second person getting tested in Kolkata is positive | Kolkata News

“The positivity rate has shot up to 50% in our lab. The pressure to test samples is tremendous. But it is good that people are going for the test. How fast we detect and isolate has an impact both on treatment and mortality,” said nuclear cardiologist Alok Roy, chairman of Medica Group of Hospitals.
“In our lab, the positivity currently is about 55%,” said a NICED Kolkata official.
Every major lab in the city started seeing a sharp rise in positive samples in April with the rate going past 20% by the second week, and there has been no stopping after that. “Even during the post-Durga Puja surge last year we would find about 30% samples positive. This time it has crossed the previous year’s record,” said Chaudhuri. ....
