Phoenix Zoo moves Mexican gray wolves as wild census moves ahead


Jade circles the fenced enclosure, leading her two sisters, both casually lagging a few paws behind. She glances back at the pair: Luna s still gnawing on what is left of their bloody breakfast and Scarlet is eyeing the two-legged visitors staring in from outside the enclosure.
There is little doubt in the den. Jade is the new alpha.
The rest of the pack, including both her parents and three brothers, moved to Texas in January as part of a cooperative breeding program for the endangered Mexican gray wolf.
“They were a little skittish for the first day or two, but they’ve settled in really well. Jade is emerging as the alpha female, followed by Luna then Scarlet,” said Dawn Addelson, a carnivore keeper at the Phoenix Zoo, the birthplace and home of the three “bachelorettes,” as Addelson likes to call them. ....
