Pandemic Pivots Arapaho Language Program To Virtual Instruction

The plan to build an immersion program at St. Stephens Indian School in Fremont County had been years in the making. Immersion language programs use various techniques to encourage bilingual learning. This program was going to have three teachers in a classroom of around a dozen kindergartners. The teachers would teach kindergarteners everything they normally do, only half in English and half in Arapaho.
Dr. Tim Rush is a retired professor at the University of Wyoming. He taught linguistics. Rush and the late Dr. Burnett Whiteplume had been working on an immersion program for years.
The late Dr. Burnette Whiteplume and I developed this model 10 to 15 years ago. The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) liked what we proposed and funded it, Rush said. ....

Local Bond Proposals See Little Resistance

Local propositions were decided at the ballot box Tuesday.
In the Hammon School District, with the bond that paid for the Hammon Community Center being paid off, voters within the school district were asked to approve a new bond that would see major upgrades to the elementary building and the agriculture farm. The 10-year bond passed with 67% of the voters approving.
A bond proposition in the Town of Arapaho virtually had no competition, garnering 100% of the yes vote.
In the Town of Burns Flat, voters were asked to continue a one-cent sales tax that would see half a penny go to parks and recreation, a quarter of the penny fund the town’s EMS, while the other quarter would fund the town’s Fire Department. ....

I-40 Pileup Injures Arapaho Woman

An Arapaho woman was injured Thursday afternoon after being involved in a four vehicle accident in Canadian County.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident occurred just after 3:30 in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near mile marker 106 when a 2013 Freightliner was disabled in the inside lane. Because of the disabled truck, a 2019 Ford F-250 had stopped behind it, this caused the 2016 Cadillac Escalade driven by 72-year-old Linda Kay Elston of Arapaho to change lanes in an attempt to not hit the stopped F-250. However while doing so the Escalade struck the passenger side rear of the pickup, then struck the rear of a 2004 Dodge Ram. ....
