ULFA disbands itself after peace agreement, to hand over arms

After nearly four decades, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) disbanded in a meeting at Sipajhar. Following a settlement with the Indian government on December 29, ULFA's chairman, Arabinda Rajkhowa, announced the decision to dissolve. The outfit, comprising around 700 members, will vacate designated camps, surrender arms, and end its existence.

United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has claimed that its camp in Myanmar was subjected to a drone attack on Sunday, causing injuries to two of its members. The group, also referred to as anti-talk ULFA, reported that three bombs were deployed in the camp, with the first at 4:10 pm, the second shortly thereafter, and the third at 4:20 pm. While two bombs exploded, the third one failed to detonate, resulting in injuries to two of its cadres.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rules out immediate talks with Paresh Baruah led militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) faction. He said that he is in touch with Baruah. Sarma said "As the political head of the state, I will continue to reach out to him. I usually talk to him every three or six months and I plan to speak to him again soon, but I don't expect him to come for talks immediately," Sarma said during an interaction with journalists here.

The Gauhati High Court has acquitted all six convicts in the 2004 bomb blast in Assam's Dhemaji. The Assam government has asked the Director General of Police to study the judgment and, if legal advice is obtained, they will appeal to the Supreme Court. The blast, carried out by the proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), killed 18 people, including 13 schoolchildren.

Gauhati High Court acquits all six convicts in 2004 bomb blast in Assam's Dhemaji

The explosion at the Independence Day celebrations was done by proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). Six people had been convicted in 2019. The Dhemaji District and Sessions Court had sentenced Lila Gogoi, Dipanjali Borgohain, Muhi Handique and Jatin Dowari to life imprisonment, and handed a four-year jail term to Prashanta Bhuyan and Hemen Gogoi.
