Re-locating Sarangani | Tito Genova Valiente

There is a book about this far-off island called Sarangani but it is not distant anymore. A historian—Ian Christopher B. Alfonso—armed with a new way of making sense of names and memories, has relocated it for us. He did this by looking back once more at history or histories that…

Sto. Nino de Cebu returns to Spain

STO. NInO REPLICA. The turnover of the replica of the image of the Santo Nino de Cebu to the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia officials on the night of Dec. 4, 2021. The replica was presented by the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona. (Barcelona PCG photo) MANILA - The Philippines has sent the exact replica of Santo Nino de Cebu to Spain with the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia as its first stop, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday. The replica was presented by the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona during an international mass in the iconic Spanish church last Sunday, which was celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain Bernardito Cleopas Auza, a native of Bohol, and the archbishop of Barcelona Cardinal Jose Omella. The original image, also the oldest religious relic in the Philippines, was found in 1565 in what now stands as the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu. On December 5, the Sagrada Familia received its exact replica as a gift from the Filipino Catholic faithful 500 years after it was gifted to Cebu by the Spanish expedition, the Armada de Maluco led by Ferdinand Magellan. "This bringing of the Santo Nino here is really history. I believe that this is long overdue and this is a special time to have as we celebrate the 500 years anniversary of (Christianity in the Philippines)," Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe Lhuillier said. Archbishop Auza said the Holy Image has always been a symbol of Philippine Catholicism in the past five centuries, a devotion that withstood the test of time as reflected with the annual grand feasts celebrating the image of Child Jesus in different parts of the country. Aside from the replica presented by the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu , Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan also donated another image of Child Jesus to Barcelona. The National Quincentennial Committee on Thursday said the two images of the Santo Nino de Cebu will roam the churches in the Catalunya, along with the replicas of the historic Santo Nino images of Tondo, Ternate, and Pandacan. The historic return of the Santo Nino de Cebu is the highlight of PCG Barcelona's cultural diplomacy program for this year and is part of its 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations. (PNA) }

Food security and the quincentennial

PAGBABAGO

Food security has become an imperative goal in our pandemic times. It is underscored in one of the two themes of the quincentennial of the coming of Christianity in the Philippines – “humanity” or compassion of our ancestors in saving the sick, starving, undernourished and hopeless crew

Filipino contemporary artists reimagine Magellan's arrival – Manila Bulletin

THY WILL BE DONE
Thy Kingdom Come (diptych), pen and ink, acrylic on canvas, 70 x 40 in, by Iggy Rodriguez
In September 1521, in a fleet of five ships and 270 men called the Armada de Maluco, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain to discover a westward route across the world in search of spices. It has been half a millennium since that voyage reshaped world trade and our idea of the size and shape of our world.
Since March 2021, 500 years later, there have been many activities constituting a global commemoration of this first circumnavigation, which opened up what Portugal considers “the Magellan Route,” a Portuguese feat, Magellan being Portuguese, and which Spain considers its own, even if it has all these years been credited mainly to a Portuguese explorer, not only because it was sponsored and financed by King Charles I, but more because, Magellan only made half the trip—He was killed in the Philippines—and it was Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano who made it back to Spain, completing the voyage from Spain to the east and back. In fact, as the argument goes, it was Elcano, not Magellan, who first circumnavigated the world.

Imagining Magellan drunk on coconut wine

Through high seas, starvation, scurvy, a mutiny, and death, Magellan arrives on the islands of the Philippines and what welcomes him? Feasts
ON THE COVER This week’s Panorama mirrors the cover design of the new, exciting book ‘Pigafetta’s Philippine Picnic’ by Felice Prudente Sta. Maria, with thanks to book designer Relly Coquia. Panorama cover design by Jules Vivas
I have yet to get a hold of Felice Prudente Sta. Maria’s new book, “Pigafetta’s Philippine Picnic,” published by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) as our contribution to the global commemoration of the Quincentennial of the First Circumnavigation, 1519-1522, but I got to talk to her and, already, as hers did while researching for the book, my imagination is at work.

Cheers for Pigafetta and Felice

ON April 13, 2021, the eve of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines (through the First Baptism in Cebu)*, we gathered in front of the monument to Antonio Pigafetta in Fort San Pedro, Cebu, sculpted by National Artist Abdulmari Imao. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has installed a new historical marker in his honor. Why is this guy important?
We mention Pigafetta always in relation to the Magellan expedition. Pigafetta said this, Pigafetta wrote that. Yet, even as a teacher in history for many years, I never realized how important he was until I actually read Pigafetta himself, having only based my knowledge previously of the famous expedition from the history textbooks. Magellan would kill for goats

AROUND THE WORLD IN 1,082 DAYS Detail of a map of Ferdinand Magellan’s Circumnavigation
“The Battle of Mactan has an underlying food story.”
So says food historian Felice Prudente Sta. Maria when I ask her about what she found most surprising while researching for her just-released book “Pigafetta’s Philippine Picnic,” published by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
How to feed 280 angry men
“Pigafetta mentioned that goats were part of a food quota demanded by Magellan of chiefs loyal to Humabon,” she explains. “He also recorded that one village refusing to cooperate was burned by the Spanish. For a long time, I had a hunch that food played a bigger role in the death of Magellan. While re-reading Pigafetta’s book, Danilo Geronimo released his biography of Magellan. It was the first time I read an enumeration of the food quota. And it demanded more than a few goats!”
