Robert Powell Jr. (AUGUSTA GA) An MTSU ROTC alumnus has become the U.S. Army Reserve’s first cyber officer to be promoted to brigadier general. Robert Powell Jr., who graduated from MTSU’s College of Liberal Arts with a bachelor’s degree in international relations in 1991, was promoted from colonel to the one-star rank of brigadier general during a ceremony on Dec. 15 at Fort Gordon, Georgia. With the promotion, Powell will serve as the deputy commanding general, cyber, of the 335th Signal Command (Theater). He commanded the Army Reserve’s Cyber Protection Brigade from 2016 to 2019. ....
15 AUGUSTA, Ga. The Army promoted the first Army Reserve cyber officer to brigadier general at Signal Theater on Fort Gordon Dec.15, 2020. Col. Robert Powell Jr. pinned the one-star rank to his Army Green Service Uniform’s shoulders during a small ceremony at the U.S. Army Signal Corps home. Powell will serve as the deputy commanding general, cyber, with the 335th Signal Command (Theater). He commanded the U.S. Army Reserve Cyber Protection Brigade from 2016 to 2019. He recently mobilized to support the Cyber National Mission Force, U.S. Cyber Command at Fort Meade, Maryland. A Tennessean, Powell graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1991 and commissioned through ROTC. He started his Army career as an Armor officer with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and joined the Army Reserve in 2004 as a military intelligence officer. ....
