Students protest for justice, adults should listen

On April 19, Minnesota middle school and high school students peacefully protested racial injustice by walking out of school. We, the older adults, should listen to them.
Our United States Constitution gives citizens the right to protest peacefully and speak out. Even so, walking out of class takes bravery because students risk their education and immediate futures to make their voices heard. In fact, some students at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul were suspended.
Their actions show how young people are leading the change for a more just Minnesota.

"After Daunte Wright, I was like, 'Really? It hasn't even been a year since George Floyd died,' " Williams said. "I was just like, we need to do something. So I started brainstorming, getting ideas from other students and I came about a walkout. That's one way we can get our voices heard."
Williams, 17, is a senior at Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minn. As she was coordinating plans with other students for her school's walkout, she learned that high schoolers in other parts of the state were doing the same.
