Marriage equality would be a step closer to equality, says queer activist
The conference was organised jointly by PUCL and the Network to present the findings of a public hearing that had recorded the testimonies of queer and trans persons facing conflict from their families.
The letter has been undersigned by 21 judges, led by Justice SN Dhingra, Retired judge of the Delhi High Court.
The petitioners sought the right of marriage relying not only on legal precedents, but also by asserting broader constitutional entitlements around the rights to life and dignity embodied in the Constitution.
The Supreme Court said that the issue of same-sex marriage in India is of “seminal importance”, a day after the Centre issued an affidavit dismissing the possibility of gay marriage laws.
