At the time, all ingredients of the process were speculative, but the new observations confirm the Blandford-Znajek idea. “What we see in our image is ordered polarization in a spiral shape,” said Issaoun, who was involved in analyzing the polarization measurements. “And the shape of the magnetic field is also spiral … which means it’s able to launch a jet.”
“I’m very chuffed,” Znajek, now a retired Cambridge city councilor, said by email.
Moreover, the new observations point to one of two rival versions of the Blandford-Znajek process that have been developed and explored in hundreds of computer simulations in recent decades, known as the MAD and SANE jet-launching scenarios. These competing ideas paint opposing pictures of a black hole’s milieu and, in particular, the origin and strength of its magnetic field. ....

MUNICH When the four-decades-old Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft entered interstellar space in 2012 and 2018, respectively, scientists celebrated. These plucky spacecraft had already traveled 120 times the distance from the Earth to the sun to reach the boundary of the heliosphere, the bubble encompassing our solar system that s affected by the solar wind. The Voyagers discovered the edge of the bubble but left scientists with many questions about how our Sun interacts with the local interstellar medium. The twin Voyagers instruments provide limited data, leaving critical gaps in our understanding of this region. ....

Closest Black Hole to Earth, 'The Unicorn,' Lies 1,500 Light-Years Away

Closest Black Hole to Earth, The Unicorn, Lies 1,500 Light-Years Away
On 4/23/21 at 9:30 AM EDT
Researchers say they have discovered what may be the closest known black hole to Earth, which they have dubbed the Unicorn.
The black hole is about three times the mass of our sun, meaning it is also among the smallest of these celestial objects on record.
According to findings published in the journal
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the black hole is located around 1,500 light-years away from Earth, within the Milky Way galaxy.

The black hole is relatively tiny, given that some of these objects are on the order of billions of solar masses. In fact, scientists have only identified a handful of black holes in the universe that are in a similar size range to the Unicorn. ....

Two UoC professors win the most prestigious European research grants

 E-Mail
The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded the two UoC researchers Professor Dr Michael Bollig and Professor Dr Stephan Schlemmer with an ERC Advanced Grant. Bollig is being funded with approximately 2.5 million euros for his REWILDING project. Schlemmer will also receive 2.5 million euros in funding for his project MissIons . The ERC Advanced Grant is considered the most important funding award in the European research landscape.
ERC Advanced Grants are awarded to outstanding scholars and scientists for projects that are associated with uncertainties due to their innovative approach, but which may open up ground-breaking new paths in their respective fields. Funding is granted to researchers who have worked consistently and successfully at the highest level for many years. ....
