Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk has stated that the Ukrainian Air Force supports the idea of strengthening the capabilities of Ukrainian attack aircraft for the sake of facilitation of offensive and defensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ukraine is seeking to deploy F-16 jet fighters as a priority for modernizing its air force, but is also looking into acquiring other Western warplanes to gradually replace its outdated fleet, Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on Telegram on Jan. 14.
Ukraine requires more attack aircraft, including jets to support infantry and planes to fire long-range missiles, Ground Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said in an interview with Reuters published on Jan. 12.
The priority for the aviation of Ukraine's Air Force remains obtaining F-16 multi-role fighters from Western partners to gain air superiority, after which, in the future, options for attack aircraft and attack helicopters can be considered to support ground troops directly.
