NEW ULM Electric scooters will be allowed on the bicycle/walking path around town, at least temporarily.
The New Ulm City Council unanimously approved a micromobility vehicle sharing operation license for a company called Bird. Bird will bring 50 electric scooters that can be rented and shared throughout the community.
In addition to approving the license, the council adopted a new ordinance regulating micromobility sharing operations. The electric scooters being brought to New Ulm are classified as micromobility vehicles. The city ordinance also identifies bicycles and electric-assisted bicycles as micromobility vehicles. ....

Council accepts mayor's resignation | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council accepted the resignation of Mayor Robert Beussman and began the process of selecting and appointing a person to fill the vacant position mayor position, Tuesday.
Beussman formally resigned as New Ulm’s Mayor on Thursday, April 15. In a letter to New Ulm citizens, Beussman said one of the reasons for his resignation was medical issues.
The council thanked Beussman for his years of service and presented him with a plaque during the meeting. Beussman received a standing ovation from those in attendance.
With the resignation of Beussman, the council appointed Council President Andrea Boettger as acting mayor effective April 21 until the council could appoint a successor. A vacancy was formally declared for the office of mayor before announcing the start of the selection process to appoint the new mayor. ....

EDA tables business loan; hesitant about apartment location | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM–The New Ulm Economic Development Authority (EDA) tabled a decision on a $50,000 loan to M&K Forestry & Land Management Services Tuesday, citing a need for more information.
M&K Forestry & Land Management is planning to start a new business and needs assistance with the down payment for a bank loan. The total loan package is $273,000 with loans from Bank Midwest and the EDA.
City Manager Chris Dalton said the $50,000 would help close a loan for equipment purchase. The equipment is currently on hold until the loan is approved.
M&K has two contracts pending once the equipment can be purchased. ....

City moves forward with garland study; will not tear down building | News, Sports, Jobs

The city council by a 4-1 vote agreed to an engineering study for anchor pole design to possibly hang holiday garlands over Minnesota Street again.
NEW ULM –The City of New Ulm will move forward with engineering services to look into designing new poles to support holiday garlands on downtown Minnesota Street.
In 2020, the holiday garlands were not strung across downtown Minnesota street because the anchor points on the buildings no longer support the holiday decorations.
To develop new decorating options, the city formed a garland committee. It was determined that if the city wanted to continue hanging the garlands, new poles will need to be installed at all intersections downtown. Before the poles can be manufactured, an engineering study must be conducted to determine where poles can be placed. Steam tunnels and utility lines run under the downtown area. Certain areas might not support new poles. ....
