The Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Atul Karwal, has announced that multi-agency rescue operations to free 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakashi will be completed by the end of the day. The trapped workers are in a 2 km-built portion of the tunnel, complete with concrete work for safety.

Rescue operations to evacuate 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhand's Silkyara tunnel resumed on Thursday morning after an overnight hurdle delayed drilling by several hours. An iron mesh in the path of the drilling machine was removed, holding up the drilling through the 57-meter stretch of rubble of the collapsed section of the tunnel by six hours.

Former advisor to the PMO, Bhaskar Khulbe, who was at the site, said an iron mesh which had come in the path of the drilling machine that was creating an escape path for workers, was removed in the morning. "Removing the mesh in a claustrophobic environment inside the pipe was difficult and the problem was compounded by lack of oxygen," said Khulbe.

RINL hopes asset monetisation may garner Rs 3000-4000 crore
