Bank of England lifts rates for the 7th consecutive time and says the United Kingdom is already in a recession.
The Bank of England voted to raise its base rate to 2.25% from 1.75% Thursday, lower than the 0.75 percentage point rise that had been expected by many traders.

Markets are showing little sign of proving recession fears wrong, as the FTSE 100 - which is made up of some of the country's biggest companies - ended the day down by 78.12 points, or 1.08 per cent.
