Burmese jungle tragedy after flight from Kent
Written by John Simpson Several well known names of the interwar years perished on attempts to set world records flying from Lympne. One of the least known flights to end in tragedy was made in 1930. On June 20, 1930, Australian Eric Hook and James (Jimmie) Matthews set out from Lympne for Australia in Gipsy Moth DH60M – G-AAWV. Their plan was to beat Bert Hinkler’s England to Australia record, by knocking days off the 15-day flight to Darwin.
