South-west Sydney wants acceptance and inclusion instead of what's known as Autism Awareness Month

April is known as Autism Awareness Month, but autistic people and their families in south-west Sydney want to redirect the conversation.
Acceptance, understanding and inclusion come to mind for Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS) organisation CEO Grace Fava, OAM.
"It's not about awareness, it's about acceptance. But acceptance does not come alone either, there needs to be understanding.
"You cannot accept anything if you do not understand it. The two go hand in hand," Ms Fava said.
Ms Fava founded the organisation when searching for services for her two autistic sons.
Grace Fava is the founder and director of the Autism Advisory and Support Service in Liverpool.

New communication boards that support inclusive play have been installed at parks in the Carnes Hill Community Precinct and Casula Parklands to help people with disability, language barriers and vision impairment.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the communication boards enhance the social experience and interaction between people of all backgrounds and abilities.
“Through simple pictorials that represent words and activities as well as Braille, anyone with a disability or anyone facing language barriers or limited expressive abilities can use the communication board to show what they would like to do and express how they feel,” Mayor Waller said.
