Mining fuels Greenland dreams of independence - and political crisis

(MENAFN - AFP) A rare earth mining project in Greenland has reignited dreams of the autonomous Arctic territory s full independence from Denmark one day, but environmentalists fear large-scale mining could harm the remote island s pristine landscape.
The planned project has also wreaked political havoc. On Tuesday, Greenland s parliament voted in favour of holding new elections at an as-yet undecided date in the spring, after a junior party quit the coalition government over disagreement about the mine.
Greenland, which obtained ownership of its mineral reserves when it gained self-rule in 2009, has long harboured hopes that the riches believed to be buried in the ground will help it cut its financial umbilical cord to Copenhagen one day. ....

Turkish Drones to Fire Autonomously at Targets in Near Future

Turkish drones such as Bayratkar and Akinci will be able to fire at targets on their own in the near future.
“We will use these UCAVs and the ammunition they carry more effectively,” head of the Defence Industries Presidency (SSB), Ismail Demir said during an interview with Daily Sabah newspaper. In the upcoming period, the unmanned crafts will be capable of firing at targets on their own, he said without elaborating.
Buoyed by the success of its drones during the conflict in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh, Turkey has intensified drone R & D including equipping them with artificial intelligence, increasing payload and precision targeting-ED ....

Since October 2018 I am a Chancellor s Fellow in Robotics and Autonomous Systems, as part of the Data Driven Innovation initiative. I am based in the Scottish Mircroelectronics Center where I am part of the Soft Systems Group. There I conduct research on soft-bodied underwater vehicle design and propulsion, soft manipulator machine-learning control, model-predictive control of unmanned underwater vehicles and shape-changing vibrational systems. I am also part of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics.
I hold a Laurea Degree (MSc equivalent) in Marine Science & Technology from the University of Pisa with a thesis on coastal meteorology numerical weather prediction undertaken at the Laboratory for Environmental Monitoring and Modelling (LAMMA) in Florence.
