Avera asks Sioux Falls for help funding Behavioral Health Center wing

Avera Health officials are asking the city for $250,000 to help build a four-story expansion wing to their Behavioral Health Center that would offer 24/7 psychiatric urgent care to patients.
Avera McKennan Foundation Vice President Robin Prunty discussed the project at Tuesday s informational meeting, joined by Thomas Otten, the assistant vice president for Avera Behavioral Health Services.
We ve started to see cases where we were full –100% full. It s a very complex thing to turn patients away when you re full, he said, adding especially when that might mean sometimes turning away a child who s dealing with thoughts of suicide.
The project will cost at least $28 million, according to the presentation given to city council, with several sources committed to donations already. ....
