Urgent need to address home-based learning fatigue

This article is written in conjunction with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP)’s 65th anniversary this year, themed ‘Aksara Nan Hidup Sepanjang Zaman.’ It also shares insights on how best to deal with pandemic fatigue, a phenomenon described as burnout and dwindling motivation among home-based learners brought on by COVID-19.
KUALA LUMPUR – The COVID-19 pandemic has forced school closures nationwide. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with schools embracing the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) system to mitigate the transmission of the virus.
However, the approach is not without its flaws as it has indirectly caused primary school pupils, in particular, to experience learning burnout or lack of motivation to learn and read.

MOE should be more transparent over SPM 2020 results

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2020 results which was announced last Thursday (June 10) is still a hot topic being discussed by several parties.
Following the announcement, questions and doubts have been raised as to whether the Ministry of Education (MOE) had been transparent over the performance achievement, which saw the national average grade (GPN) for SPM 2020 candidates improve to 4.80 compared to 4.86 in 2019, the highest in the last five years, despite the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
From the results, it is clear that the pandemic situation since last year had not affected the education system, in fact it is seen that students had done better under such circumstances.

School-based assessment best approach in developing students holistically

29 Apr 2021 / 09:04 H.

KUALA LUMPUR: Empowering the school-based assessment (PBS) and the classroom assessment (PBD) starting this year has been described as the best approach in developing students holistically.
Assoc Prof Dr Azlin Norhaini Mansor, senior lecturer at the Centre Department of Education Leadership and Policy of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) said this is because the assessments would emphasis various aspects including physical, spiritual and intellectual compared to the existing one which focuses more on academic achievement through examinations.
‘‘...and when we switch to PBS, there will be less comparison and competition, like ‘5A’ is better than ‘4A’, then there may not be a situation where many pupils want to score 5A’s in UPSR.

Improve DidikTV KPM content to remain relevant

09 Mar 2021 / 11:49 H.
Bernama
KUALA LUMPUR, March 9: In less than a month after the launch of the Education TV channel, DidikTV KPM, various reactions have been received from the community about the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s efforts to increase education access nationwide.
As soon as it came on air, DidikTV KPM has been bombarded with much criticism thrown at the teacher featured in the programme, such that some actually went to great lengths to question the credibility of the MOE in maintaining the quality of the content.
As if that was not enough, there were those who questioned DidikTV KPM’s approach to the concept of edutainment, which seemed to stray further from the original purpose of the implementation of Education TV.
