Further study needed on virus mutations, DOH says

ADDITIONAL data are needed to determine whether the Sars-CoV-2 mutations detected in specimens from Cebu would have significant public health implications, the Department of Health (DOH) said.
In a statement issued late Thursday night, February 18, 2021, DOH said the Center for Health Development in Central Visayas (CHD-7) was expected to submit additional samples for genomic sequencing.
These should “provide additional information to guide their (Central Visayas’) ongoing Covid-19 response,” the agency said.
DOH assured that CHD-7 has initiated measures to contain the transmission in the region.
An investigation has been launched to characterize the cases and areas of concern. ....

DOH says 40 Sars-CoV-2 variant cases have recovered

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, said only three individuals who had contracted the B.1.1.7 variant of the novel coronavirus are considered active cases.
As of February 14, DOH Epidemiology Bureau Director Alethea De Guzman said 40 of the 44 cases in the Philippines have recovered.
One patient was earlier reported to have succumbed to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in January 2021.
Of the 44 cases, 15 are returning overseas Filipino workers (OFW).
De Guzman said the three active cases were identified as a returning overseas Filipino (ROF) from the United Arab Emirates, a 20-year-old female from Sabangan in Mountain Province, and a 37-year-old male from Impasug-ong, Bukidnon. ....

DOH apologizes to Cebu over variant case report

DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Monday, February 8, 2021, apologized to the Province of Cebu over a report about a B.1.1.7 variant case from Liloan town.
Vergeire, however, said the DOH report was based on information provided by the patient at the time that he was tested for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The patient had listed Liloan, Cebu as his address in the case investigation form. His swab specimen, which was collected on January 17 in Metro Manila, was found positive for the B.1.1.7 variant of Sars-CoV-2.
“We’d like to apologize to the Province of Cebu. Hindi po tayo para mag-instigate nitong takot, ngunit iyon lang po talaga ang ating regular.o kasama po doon sa pagre-report natin talaga because that’s part of the case investigation form,” Vergeire said in a virtual press briefing Monday. ....
