About this. story is nine months old but certain city councils are pursuing a process of defunding the police that came before the kansas city council this past week. tell us about it, and why it is happening? it was truly a surprise and a very reckless move by our city council and our mayor and it was so proven reckless they didn t even discuss it with four of the council members, nor the police chief, nor the police commission. they put it on the council agenda and rammed it right through. they had nine votes. they knew the four of us that voted no would probably vote no anyway. they still had the votes. they could have discuss it with us. this is back room politics, coming out very shady to me. pete: theresa, what do they think will come of this? they want to defund the police department, effectively tie their hands, make them less effective. what is the sales job for that? ....
Long from the chicago tribune. good to have you here. let s talk first where this stands. they promised to make a move valentine s day. it moved that way. but what are the biggest hang-ups, biggest obstacles moving forward? one of the big things here in illinois, is that in the house they have a whole new set of lawmakers, as you know, after reapportionment, remapping, and all the very states. illinois is the same. they have dozens of new lawmakers. they ve got to figure out who is on which side. that is one of the hurdles. it s also a controversial vote in itself, so therefore there will be some pushing back. there was in the senate, but the illinois house and the illinois senate have expanded their democratic majorities. therefore, it has looked like this will be a better shot this time. it was, of course, the first time that it passed the senate. this would be the first time it could pass the house. talk to us about the back room politics associated with ....
Them, but to halliburton, to boeing, to g.e., to ray these oo raytheon and that nobody voted for. what i see is the voices of the people are not being represented. if we could do like a 30,000 foot view on this just for a minute, i think you re rice. this is precipice politics. but i think that s exactly what was voted for in 2010. when people went to the voting booths in 2010, they pulled the lever for a stop. stop with the quick opaque back room politics. let s bring it to the brink of that s not what they wanted. but if we have to go to the table three and four times with a bill or c.r. to reach some agreement, if we have to take our time, if we have to reach a potential government shutdown, people want to see the process. they re not getting that with the super committee. but the precipice politics is sort of allowing voters in on ....
