going to go, and there will not be gun legislation this year, especially an election year the prospects are dim. >> prospects potentially are dim for passage. let's be clear you need 60 votes in the senate because of the cloture rule. i think leader schumer appropriately is saying what should we bring to the floor regardless of this? what we know is that the issue of gun violence is a top priority issue for voters across the country. that's red states and blue states. senator cornyn may be saying that that's it. but i think he's also hearing from a lot in his caucus, they don't want to take votes on this. we at brady, we want votes on an assault weapons ban, on ensuring we have reasonable community violence intervention programs, on expanding the brady background check system which

intervene. it's not, you know, it's not a permanent ban from possessing weapons. it's a ban until you can get better. the other thing is, i think we need to fix the background check system. it's broken. the instant check system is broken and needs to be fixed. we don't have enough time here to go into all the reasons why it's broken. and then honestly, as conservative, i still say that -- and i cite the international association of chief of police, certain shoulder weapons, semiautomatic weapons, extended magazines, armor piercing loads, you need a rigorous background check and some of them should be banned. >> i appreciate you identifying yourself as a conservative saying that. i think if we're having this conversation, i'm not smart enough to know what answer should be, but we need this conversation and people need to come forward to say let's get in a room and talk about these

with the scale of the tragedy and with what they're saying rhetorically >> i do think that the -- nobody can question the commitment i think of president biden on this issue. as a long standing, decades long history of standing up for sensible gun safety laws, the problem here is in congress and it's not just all congress, it's republicans in congress, who continue to stand with the gun manufacturers against things very simple things that american people support banning high capacity magazines, getting control over the background check system so we have expanded and foolproof background checks. so these are not complicated issues for the american people but they are complicated for republicans in congress. it's a sad state of affairs that literally the president can issue a statement every other day because we are experiencing

because he bought it at a gun dealer, and there's a federal background check system. exactly that's correct. so any any licensed dealer has to do a background check whenever they sell a gun? to a civilian like what happened in this situation, so uh, you know, as far as signs that we're aware of right now, for what could have made him prohibited from owning a gun. we don't have any. he didn't have a criminal criminal history that was severe or any at all. it seems like from what we understand right now, and you didn't have a history of being committed. there are other ways . you know, there's red flag laws, which is something we talked about a lot and yeah, and was discussed in that segment. uh that's that's sort of a middle ground between, um what can be done for somebody who's been who's experiencing severe mental health issues with a threat to themselves or others. we've seen that with the buffalo shooter with you validly shooter there was i mean, we see a troubled young men who the society knows that they're troubled, but you have to use the red flag law and there are other laws, not just read

forward, extreme risk protection laws 19 states had in the district of columbia have those. expanding the brady background check system right now in tennessee, you can buy a gun online with no background check at all. that's insane. having a permitting system instead of repealing it, which is what the legislature did last year, banning assault weapons, restricting high capacity magazines. ensuring that there are safe storage requirements in the state. these are the kinds of laws that states across this country have adopted, and you know what happens when they do death and injury by guns is reduced. guns that are in the arms of people who are at risk to themselves or others have the capability of being removed, and that kind of law, an extreme risk protection law, for example, could have been hugely helpful in this particular case. i just want to say one more thing. democracy and gun violence prevention are completely linked
