Monroe statue should move to battlefield, Custer to Gettysburg The Monroe News The debate on Monroe’s statues revolves around whose history should be remembered. A handful of people in Monroe decided President James Monroe deserved a statue 200 years after he was elected President! Of course that decision was made after the War of 1812 battlefield site was being implemented. The statue was intended to compliment the park and Monroe could evolve into the cornerstone for the state of Michigan.
