So you're here because you were thrust into this position and I know your resume is very impressive yours and education and all get to that or maybe a little 2nd but you're 1st into this thing after the untimely death of a Baltimore County executive Kevin cabinets What are your thoughts what did what was your reaction just so so sudden so tragic tragic is absolutely the word I will never forget May the 10th 2018 as I as I tell folks when you get a call at 2 in the morning no one is asking you to pick up bread or bring home milk you know something's wrong and it was just horrific and on that better early morning I lost a good friend Baltimore County lost a county executive but as I've said to folks many times over the past 3 and a half weeks there was this incredible moment where the county executives wife Jill Cameron It's who spoke eloquently at his funeral service she looked down at the end and she looked at her boys and she said we're going to be Ok and. It was just a moment. During that service where everyone just took your breath away and it was such a paraffin message and I think what I've tried to do in the 3 and a half weeks is to sort of give a collective hug to the $830000.00 people in Baltimore County channel Jill candidates and say we're going to be Ok We're going to take it a step at a time and we're going to do everything we can in the next 6 months to carry on the county executives legacy I'm confident he's with us I'm confident he is on our shoulder and our goal is to turn over the county in December when the next administration comes in in really good shape make the county executive proud make the people of Baltimore County proud. If you see it as a place holder or are you are you going to be really active and you say continuing of the common its vision and his legacy Yes I don't think that's a terrific question Sean I think why you respect the vision and the county executive vision was always crystal clear it was public education public safety rebuilding our aging infrastructure that's what makes Baltimore County work very very proud of that at the same time you can't be a place holder once you step into that chair once you go into that office you're the county executive you have decisions to make. We really are focusing already on and I think the count former county executive would be very supportive of this we want to make sure that we work with folks to make government government open transparent and customer service and customer service oriented I think local government if you talk to was always struck. Early in his administration county executive candidates had a lunch with all the former county executive he brought them in to seek their advice and counsel and as they want to round the table every one of them starting back with Ted Beneteau was up through Dennis Rasmussen Dennis Rasmussen and Don Hutchinson in touching Jim Smith every one of them had one message for for Kevin candidates and that was Kevin and joy these next 8 years being county executive is the best job you will ever have and just in 3 and a half weeks I already know what they're talking about I used to floods and Frank near and dear to your heart being an old Ellicott City guy. So you go out there you survey that and then what came out of that was this unbelievably inspirational moment where our firefighters in Elica City firefighters were standing hand in hand where our Department of Public Works employees were going house to house with trucks to pick up debris from Baltimore County residents Baltimore County residents helping neighbors pump basements so you look around and you realize as county executive you're working with all of these groups together and as as as county executive Cameron It's often said there are democratic potholes in Republican potholes there aren't democratic schools to air condition and Republican schools air conditioned there were Democratic basements and Republican basements they got flooded there's a job to do so you can't be a place holder you have to move forward you have to be energetic and I'm going to do everything I can the next 6 months to be the best county executive I can be for the people of Baltimore County down along those lines we have numerous Republican and Democrat candidates running for Baltimore County executive. And I'm just wondering. What all the ideas and proposals that they have come up with you probably heard what what many of these candidates are advocating what are some of the better I was that you don't have them to name names necessarily but some of the better ideas that you've heard and what of those ideas which of those ideas could you maybe give a jump start on by implementing Well I think I think a number of the candidates on both sides of the aisle are talking about that they they certainly continue to talk about. Continuing Baltimore County's focus on fiscal responsibility but I think we also recognize that this is an aging County I mean it's well documented our aging schools stock most of our pipes are 50 and 60 years old we have to make major investments in that and what I think all of these candidates recognize that we're going to have to have a serious discussion about what that means in terms of priorities and also revenue moving forward when we were county that hasn't raised taxes now in about 30 years either property taxes or income taxes. I'm not sure going forward that that's sustainable I'm not sure that any government can continue to move forward without some kind of revenue and Hansing measures so that's going to be on the plate of everyone as we move forward as we continue to invest in schools Frank as we continue to to rebuild this infrastructure at the same time I think everyone recognizes and we've taken some steps but we can accelerate it we need to do more to allow the public to peek behind the curtain they need to know how government is making decisions they need to know what they do government is using to inform those decisions and the more that we can make available to folks either on the web or through social media allowing people to get actively involved in the budget process and I think some of them are talking about that so I think there's some real opportunity when whoever comes in December Ok more with Account Executive and just a moment we're going to call a pause briefly for an update on traffic standing by with the latest on Friday morning rush. I tell everyone that I was one of the individuals betrayed the only other word I can use betrayed by Dallas stance I believed in Dallas I really supported his vision I thought he was an incredibly bright young energetic superintendent and even when the rumors began showing I would say to folks I would say to reporters look if something comes out of this I'm going to be dumbfounded dumbfounded I was so I misread Dallas. He misrepresented who he was and he did serious damage to the school system there is no comparison to Dallas stance and for leader white I've known for little white for more than 20 years she is the superintendent of the Baltimore County Public Schools she is an outstanding superintendent I have every confidence that she will repair this damage that damage and that she is a healer. She she when you walk into schools with Superintendent white she has one focus it's kids it's instruction and it's what what's best for kids and she's she understands that she has work to do she understands that she has to rebuild the trust and we're 100 percent supportive of whatever odd it anyone wants to do because here's what we know there's a micro and a macro way to look at this and even today and again I'm very fortunate because I've had I have grandchildren at almost every level in the Baltimore County Public Schools I have a 10th grader I have a 5th grader who it's hard for me to believe is now going to be a 6th grader I have a 2nd grader I have a kindergartner and I have 2 on the way so I see the Baltimore County Public Schools up close and personal so that's not any school system my grandchildren are getting a terrific education but so when you ask individuals when you ask families how do you feel about your local school they always get high marks A's or B.'s They love their local school for most people when you know in Frank you know for most folks it's about the quality of my child's teaching if I have or my child has a good teacher I feel good about that school if I like my principal I feel good about that school that's that's the micro level but I think what superintendent white understands is that there's a macro issue and there's no doubt that people lost trust that people just were put back by what happened and what Dallas stance did and one of the things anyone that knows superintendent White knows that her personality is one where she's open I keep using that word transparent and I believe given time and she's going to have the time now over the next year to show people again who she truly is and allow them to begin to believe in her and that audit will come back and. There's been she's been supportive of the audit as well I think what's gotten lost to Shawn and Frank is that almost immediately after the Dallas stance blowup and the issues a superintendent white worked with the board to put regulations into place to save Baltimore County superintendents moving forward may not do any outside work makes perfect sense to me makes perfect sense she did make mistakes she absolutely hate me and that is it are the others disqualifying mistakes you're talking about the top school position in Baltimore County she's a a lovely woman she should stand as she had so but is that the right message to send to other educators are you going to everybody else in the school system yet this is a it's a fair question here's the problem with trying to talk about them state she may know more than willing to do it but it gets complicated and it sounds like you're being an apologist and I don't think any of us want to be an apologist but here's the reality of that form there were 4 or 5 places on that form where it indicated that the little bit and the the amount of. But but by the same token you.
