Scaled-down Memorial Day observances to be held Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. ISLANDER FILE PHOTO MOUNT DESERT ISLAND—For the second year in a row, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused Memorial Day observances to be scaled back and simplified. The biggest change will be the absence of parades in Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Bar Harbor The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at the Village Green at 10 a.m. Members of the Bar Harbor fire and police departments will be in attendance, and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows will be the guest speaker. Limited seating will be made available, but those attending may wish to bring their own chair.

Changes made to annual Memorial Day observance May 4, 2021 on News BAR HARBOR — In observance of Memorial Day on May 31, in compliance with the CDC recommendations for the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bar Harbor Garden Club is forgoing its usual on-site ceremony at the Blue Star Memorial Marker site on Route 3 in Bar Harbor. Instead, the club will leave a weatherproof bin at the site. The public is invited to stop by any time between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to leave a written thought in the bin reflecting a sentiment appropriate for remembering and honoring the nation’s veterans. The collection will be archived and displayed for viewing at the Veterans Day observance at the same site. Also, notes collected during the Veterans Day commemoration will be on display.
Arts Glances Gitlin hosts fun-filled program about funny programs NORTHEAST HARBOR — Join in on the fun on Wednesday, March 17 at 5 p.m., when the Northeast Harbor Library will host award-winning author and pop culture historian Martin Gitlin for a Zoom presentation to discuss his book, “The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time.” In his book, Gitlin ranks the best of the best funny programs that ever aired. He will show snippets from those shows and others, challenge patrons with sitcom trivia, discuss the criteria he used to rank the shows and talk about how sitcoms have evolved over the decades in humor, presentation and content.
Bar Harbor Garden Club member awarded Lifetime Membership BAR HARBOR — Carolyn Miller, a long-time Bar Harbor Garden Club member, was awarded Lifetime Membership in recognition of being a part of the organization for 50 years. In 2016, Carolyn was one of eight people from the club who was interviewed to document their memories for the early development of the Wild Gardens of Acadia. The gardens had been established in 1961 by the Bar Harbor Garden Club in cooperation with Acadia National Park and were still being developed when Carolyn joined in 1971. She remembered Keith, her husband, being appreciative of all the work by garden club members during his tenure as superintendent of Acadia National Park.
