EDITORIAL: Florida lawmakers, show you care about kids' mental health

There is certainly no question about that.
But sadly this, too, is also beyond debate: Florida as a state continues to do an abysmal job of transforming its stated love for children into proper funding to help kids who are confronting mental health issues. And the yawning gap between idealistic talk and genuine action is particularly acute across Southwest Florida.
Consider these realities:
Paul Simeone, vice president of mental and behavioral health for Lee Health in Lee County, noted during a recent meeting of the Fort Myers News-Press’ Southwest Florida Community Advisory Board that the county lags behind others in providing public funds for children’s behavioral health while surrounding areas like Hendry County remain massively underserved. “I’m incredibly frustrated,” Simeone said. ....

Piney Point: USF and Sarasota Dolphin Research Program to study environmental impact

Separately this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and staff from the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program announced that it has begun monitoring the dolphins in the area surrounding the gypsum stack spill.
The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, a leading dolphin research organization, has maintained the world’s longest longitudinal study of dolphins in the wild.
Through research measures such as dolphin surveys and seasonal monitoring of dolphin prey fish, the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program helps scientists learn about dolphin biology, environmental impacts on their health and reproductive success, their social structure and the effects of human activities. ....

For Barancik Foundation, a new round of charitable community support

Funds will also support the economic recovery of local arts organizations.
“Addressing the systemic issues that impact generations of families requires sustained focus and effort,” Teri A Hansen, president and CEO of the Barancik Foundation, said in a news release. “We are optimistic that the investment of these resources will lead to a brighter, more resilient community.”
The earlier the investment, the greater the return is the Barancik Foundation’s philosophy on the life-changing importance of investing in early childhood development and education.
Grants approved by the foundation board at a recent meeting totaling just over $1 million have been awarded to boost efforts to support infant and early childhood services. ....

The Horses for Heroes program is an experiential learning program that uses both mounted and un-mounted equine assisted activities and therapies to aid in physical and emotional healing. Hello 2021! Here we are just over a month into the new year and the Greater Sarasota Chamber is poised and ready to work for our member businesses and the community. This is a very special time for our chamber as we start the celebration of our 100th year. We are so proud to have served the community and supported the growth of businesses in our region for the last century.
When we look back over the last 100 years, our chamber has been at the epicenter of community involvement, lending to the development and strengthening of local businesses. If we go back to the 1920s, the chamber was instrumental in leading the charge for the formation of a new county to be called Sarasota. In the 1930s and 1940s, the chamber worked to promote tourism to our area, supported the building of roads/bridges and worked with leaders to bring the first commercial air service to Sarasota. Through the 1950s and 1960s, the Chamber’s Sports Committee enticed the Chicago White Sox ....
