The Porter County Board of Commissioners signaled a new era Tuesday with the election of new officers and putting the Memorial Opera House expansion on hold.

Two years to the day after a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden as the nation’s next president, a Portage attorney filed a tort claim against Porter County Council President Jeremy Rivas asking for $300,000 in damages for defamation because of a Facebook post on Oct. 30 in which Rivas called him “an insurrectionist” for traveling to Washington, D.C.

With a bond for the construction of the Porter County Jail expiring next year, county officials are rushing to address needs at county facilities, including the highway department’s center garage.

"As a political newcomer, I knew I would have to spend some of my own money if I wanted to have any chance in the election," Barb Regnitz said.

The winner will be the District 2 (center) commissioner but will be elected by all voters in the county.
