Today marks one year since the police murder of George Floyd, which sparked protests around the world and spurred a new wave of activism.
To reflect on the past year, CAI talked with people in our region about how Floyd’s death touched their lives and prompted action.

At Barnstable High School, one teacher is giving students a deeper look at Black history.


HYANNIS Being able to have the opportunity to learn a different side of American history has kept Barnstable High School seniors Cara Ciavvara and Olivia Florestal a reason to stay in class. 
“I notice black culture more when looking around me,” Florestal, who is Black, said in a message to the Times. “And I’ve been given the skills on how to keep up to date with Black issues.” 
The African American Experience is a new class offered at Barnstable High School this year. 
Taught by Krissie Williams, the class focuses on Black history by examining events and policies that the United States enacted and how it has affected African Americans as a whole. The class also focuses on celebrating the achievements of African Americans.  ....

Jeanne Morrison, consultant in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives for nonprofit organizations, and career counselor to youth of color. She serves on multiple local and state boards and steering committees for non- profit organizations committed to social and racial justice including the League of Women Voters Cape Cod, Barnstable Human Rights Commission and Barnstable No Place For Hate.

For the month of January, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum is serving as a collection location for A Baby Center donations.
For over 20 years, the Hyannis-based charity has been providing critical baby essentials, at no cost, to parents of infants in poverty on Cape and Islands, and helping to ensure the good health and safety of babies and toddlers in our community.
The organization also offers resources such as parenting support programs and nutritional guidance to young families.
Throughout the entire month, drop off new baby supplies at the Maritime Museum Wednesday through Friday between noon and 3 p.m., or by appointment any other day of the week. A Baby Center s wish list includes: size six (6) diapers; baby wash, lotion and shampoo; rash cream; and toddler clothing- sizes 12M, 2T, 3T, 4T and 5T. ....
