Batavia United Way invites community to join the 21-Week Equity Challenge

  Posted1/18/2021 7:34 PM Batavia United Way, in association with 43 other local United Ways across the state, is joining the United Way of Illinois in encouraging Illinois residents to engage in a 21-week program engaging in racial equity activities to gain a deeper understanding of the impact systemic racism and inequity have on the state and in local communities. The Batavia community is full of allies and individuals who want to help. One of the first steps to bringing about action is getting a better understanding of the issues at hand Batavia United Way is very excited to participate in this unique opportunity to educate and encourage meaningful conversations on equity and racism, and we hope others consider joining us to do so, said Bonnie Baumgartner, executive director of Batavia United Way.

Batavia Community Diversity Initiative launches, names leadership council   This fall, the Batavia Community Diversity Initiative helped register voters ahead of the general election and began working with community leaders on future partnerships and coalition building. The organization formed virtually over the summer of 2020 in response to the racial justice protest movement that arose and quickly spread throughout the country, including here in Batavia, following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn.
