Region 6 to further increase vax coverage during weeklong drive

'PINASLAKAS' CAMPAIGN. The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) launches its 'PinasLakas' Vaccination Campaign at Robinsons Place in Jaro, Iloilo City on July 26, 2022. The department will hold its weeklong special vaccination from Sept. 26-30 to boost the PinasLakas accomplishment rate. (PNA file photo by PGLena) ILOILO CITY - The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) is hoping to further increase its accomplishment rate under the "Bakunahang Bayan: PinasLakas National Vaccination Days" campaign with the conduct of special inoculation against Covid-19 on Sept. 26-30. "Our objective is to facilitate the rapid mobilization of the Covid-19 vaccination among our eligible population," Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, head of the DOH WV CHD infectious disease section, said in an interview on Monday. The Pinaslakas campaign that was launched in July this year initially targeted to vaccinate 96,522 senior citizens for their primary series and 2,049,876 for the first booster of the eligible population, except for the 5-11 pediatric age group, during the first 100 days of the current administration. "Our accomplishment is very low, at 1,552 or 1.61 percent so we need to vaccinate 94,970 of our senior citizens. For booster, we have accomplished 142,887 or 6.97 percent of our over 2 million target. So we still have a goal to vaccinate around 1.9 million," she said. Natalaray said their central office has readjusted the target for the first booster dose to 30 percent for the first 100 days and the 50 percent will already be achieved for the rest of the year while the 90 percent target for primary series of senior citizens remains the same. Currently, the local government units (LGUs) that are closer to the 50 percent target are Iloilo City with 47.94 percent and Bacolod City with 23. 12 percent. "Our LGUs should have this target in mind to go beyond our endemic state. So we need to have this wall of immunity so that eventually we can progress on our endemic state," she said. Natalaray said a series of launching activities will be held this week, with focus on those needing improvement in their coverage for senior citizens such as Antique and Negros Occidental. The elderly vaccination rate of Antique is at 58.55 percent or 30,921 out of the 52,725 target eligible population while Negros Occidental has 60.76 percent or 139,800 out of the 229,162 target. Nonetheless, Natalaray attributed the region's low cases of Covid-19 to vaccination, and observance of minimum health protocols. She said that 94.14 percent of the target eligible population availed of their primary series or are fully vaccinated while the elderly has a 77.35-percent coverage. Western Visayas, as of Sept. 25, 2022, has 1,422 active cases, which is 0.72 percent of the 195,999 total cumulative cases. "The whole of Region 6 is at minimal risk for Covid-19," Natalaray said, noting that the number of cases is decreasing. In August, the average daily case was at 156 per day, and 71 this September. Covid variants, non-compliance with protocols hike cases

INCREASING. The latest cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in Western Visayas. The increase in cases was attributed to the presence of the sub-variants, particularly Omicron, the decline in the observance of the minimum public health standards, and the opening up of the economy in Level 1 areas.(Graphics courtesy of DOH WV CHD) ILOILO CITY - The presence of the highly contagious coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) variants, lax observance of the minimum health standards, and increased interaction of people due to more relaxed restrictions led to the increased risk of transmission in Western Visayas, a regional health official said on Friday. As of July 21, 2022, the region has a total of 2,031 active cases as reported by the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD). "Yesterday (July 21), we have 177 new cases for a total of 2,031 active cases. We have recorded 91 recoveries and zero deaths," said Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, head of the DOH WV CHD Infectious Disease Section, in an interview. Most of the cases or 93.60 percent have mild symptoms or asymptomatic, she added. She said the region's daily average cases already reached 133, higher when compared with the 33 cases per day in June, and an average of eight cases per day in May. However, the health care utilization rate remains low risk at 35.89 percent. "The presence of our sub-variants, particularly our BA.5, which is highly contagious when compared with our original Omicron variant; our declined compliance to minimum health standards, especially on the correct and consistent use of face masks; and the opening up of economy in Level 1 areas leading to increased interaction of people, increased the risk of transmission," she said. During the virtual media forum of the DOH central office on July 20, it was reported that Western Visayas has 309 BA.5 variants, seven BA.4 and two cases of BA.2.12.1 cases. The medical officer said that they always emphasize the need to get inoculated as protection against the highly-transmissible variants and booster doses for the eligible population if they already have received their primary series. "After their primary series, their immunity against Covid-19 also wanes so it is important that they boost their immune system again," she added. The second booster is already available for senior citizens, adults with comorbidities, and health workers. "We have enough vaccines; we have Pfizer vaccines for our booster. We have remaining allocation from our national vaccine operations center," Natalaray said. As of July 18 data, 5,177, 528 or 79.9 percent of the 6,480,257 target population are fully vaccinated, 170, 136 or 2.63 are partially vaccinated, 778,158 or 12.01 percent have their first booster and 28, 528 or .44 percent have their second booster. Health exec urges W. Visayas LGUs to activate dengue task forces

INCREASING. A health expert urges local government units in Western Visayas on Thursday (July 21, 2022) to reactivate their dengue task forces amid the rising cases of dengue for the first six months of 2022. For the said period, 283 barangays in the region were found to have clustering of cases while eight others were identified as hotspot areas.(Graphics courtesy of DOH FB page) ILOILO CITY - A health official on Thursday called on local governments in Western Visayas to activate their dengue task forces amid the rising cases in the region. Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, Department of Health Infectious Disease Section in the region, said data from the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit showed that from January 1 to July 9 this year, dengue cases reached 5,837 with 34 deaths. This translated to a 423 percent increase in cases as the region only posted 1,160 cases with nine deaths in the same period in 2021. Negros Occidental posted the highest rise at 823 percent with its 2,096 cases compared to the 227 cases for the same period last year. Cases in Antique increased by 684 percent with 1,591 cases compared with 203 in 2021 while Iloilo province posted a 361 percent jump with 986 cases as against 214 in the previous year. Natalaray said it is important for municipalities and barangays to reactivate their task forces to carry out the enhanced strategy. She added thatbased on their monitoring there are areas whose dengue task forces would be ready for reactivation while other municipalities are preparing to create their teams. She said mosquito-breeding places must be searched and destroyed, and wearing light-colored clothes and applying insect repellant are advised for self-protection. "We always emphasize seeking early medical consultation within two days for children suffering from fever. Upon looking at the history of dengue deaths, we saw that most of them were delayed in seeking consultation from hospitals and rural health units," Natalaray said. Dengue fast lanes have been put up in hospitals and rural health units. Eight barangays in Western Visayas were identified as dengue hotspots to include villages Tagda and Nanunga in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental; Badiang and Atabay in San Jose and in Poblacion in Patnongon from Antique; Poblacion South in Oton, Iloilo and Taculing and Mansilingan in Bacolod City. "Hotspot areas have sustained increase in cases or have clustering of cases and dengue deaths," Natalaray said, adding that those areas have been advised to conduct medical vector control like spraying and fogging. Some 283 barangays in the region were found to have a clustering of cases or with three or more cases in the last four weeks. (PNA) }

Iloilo LGUs urged to prepare facilities amid Covid surge

'PREPARE'. Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, medical officer III of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development. In an interview on Friday (Jan. 21, 2022), Natalaray said with the increase in Covid-19 cases in the region, local government units need to prepare their temporary treatment and monitoring facilities to decongest hospitals of mild cases.(PNA file photo) ILOILO CITY - Local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas have been advised to prepare their temporary treatment and monitoring facilities (TTMFs) amid the increasing cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the region. In an interview Friday, Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, medical officer III of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD), said most of the admitted cases are manifesting mild symptoms, thus LGUs should help decongest hospitals by managing them in TTMFs. Natalaray said TTMFs need to have medical doctors and nurses who will be in charge of the facilities. "In just two weeks, cases are fast increasing. This January, we average at 504 cases per day, compared with December 2021 when we (had) 26 cases per day. We have an abrupt increase in cases. The transmission and positivity rate is high in the provinces," she said. As of January 19, the region recorded 10, 826 active cases - 52.12 percent are asymptomatic, 42.98 percent are mild and 4.9 percent are moderate, severe, and critical. Natalaray said several factors have caused the surge, such as the decrease in the compliance with minimum public health standards (MPHS); mass gatherings during the holidays; convergence of people in enclosed places and close-contact settings; and the presence of the Delta, Omicron, Alpha, and Beta variants. The reduction of cases, she said, would depend on the implementation of the MPHS by LGUs and the prevent, detect, isolate, treat, and re-integrate strategy, particularly the isolation of symptomatic cases. "With the rising cases, it is important that we go back to our minimum public health standards. For our workplaces, we emphasize that they have to be well-ventilated and practice safe physical distancing since (most) of our cases are in workplaces," Natalaray said. She reiterated the importance of immediate isolation for those who experience symptoms, along with getting tested and informing their close contacts to undergo quarantine. Nonetheless, she said, the health care utilization rate of Western Visayas is still at low risk, although Aklan and Iloilo City are at moderate risk. Currently, 1,244 out of 2,240 hospital beds dedicated to Covid-19 patients are occupied. "But looking at our hospital, (patients) mostly are having mild and moderate symptoms. Two percent of our admissions are actually critical cases," she said. She added that public hospitals should allocate at least 50 percent of their beds to Covid-19 patients, and private hospitals, 30 percent of their bed capacity. In case of home quarantine, some doctors allow telemedicine consultations. Natalaray added that vaccination is important to prevent severe symptoms or getting hospitalized. "Since we have (a) high vaccination rate in Western Visayas, we have less cases of severe and critical symptoms compared with previous months, especially during the time (of the) Delta (variant) in August and September when we (had) more deaths," she added. As of January 20, about 82.22 percent of the target eligible population based on 2021 data, which is equivalent to 4, 887,618, have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine; 72.21 percent or 4,084,827 are fully vaccinated; and 3.18 percent or 177, 237 have been administered booster shots. Bacolod folks lauded after city's downgrade to Alert Level 1

(PNA Bacolod file photo) BACOLOD CITY - Mayor Evelio Leonardia lauded the various sectors here for their cooperation in the city government's response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis after the status of Bacolod was further downgraded to Alert Level 1. In a statement on Wednesday, Leonardia said the recent development is a testimony to the city's effective management of the pandemic. "To put things in proper perspective, the Department of Health (DOH) placed Bacolod under Alert Level 1 because the city is now classified as a 'minimal risk' area," he added. In a media briefing, the new alert status of Bacolod was discussed by Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray of the DOH 6 (Western Visayas), where she explained that this was due to the declining attack rate in the city from 2.59 percent to 0.59 percent per 100,000 population. The health care system utilization of Bacolod has also decreased to only 12.46 percent, she added. "It is a recognition of the timely and innovative interventions of the Emergency Operations Center - Task Force (EOC-TF) that resulted in the containment of infections and continued decline of attack rate (in) the past weeks," Leonardia said. He acknowledged the efforts of individuals from various sectors, including Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, chair of the city Inter-Agency Task Force, along with the personnel of the EOC-TF, City Health Office, and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. These include the health front-liners and volunteers, as well as those in the barangays led by the village officials, barangay health workers, and nutrition scholars, and even the barangay tanod. Leonardia also cited the contribution of the business community, the public and private schools, and the management of various shopping malls and food chains that opened their facilities to serve as vaccination centers. "Let me also thank the Bacolodnons for their full cooperation to the city government's call to get vaccinated. Our sincere appreciation, too, to the members of the media, who had been helping us in our information and education campaigns these past months," he added. Still, Leonardia said the "very positive news for our city" should not be a reason for the people to be complacent. "Let us continue to follow minimum health protocols, observe physical distancing, regularly disinfect, practice proper hygiene and avoid high-risk places," he added. As of Wednesday, Bacolod has only five new Covid-19 cases and 233 remaining active cases, data from the DOH-6 showed. (PNA) }
