Letters: How the Hancock shambles looks in the eyes of a staunch Conservative

SIR – What a shambles! I am a staunch Conservative but I have to agree with comments made by Sir Keir Starmer on the news channels.
The Prime Minister made two huge errors. He should have sacked Dominic Cummings after his spree at Barnard Castle and Matt Hancock immediately, instead of saying, after he had received an apology, that the matter was “closed”.
The Prime Minister needs to be more like Churchill, who had the strength of character to replace at least one close friend in his Cabinet during the Second World War as he deemed it necessary. ....

England's nursery schools driven towards extinction, says survey | Early years education

The survey, by Early Education and the sector’s leading unions, including Unison and the National Education Union, found nursery schools were losing an average of £76,000 in annual income and having to spend an extra £8,000 in costs directly related to Covid-19.
Almost half of the 200 maintained nurseries across 75 local authorities said they would be running deficits for the financial year, and only one in four said they could continue to operate with current funding. One in five reported they had emergency financial recovery plans in place or under discussion.
Cathy Earley, the head of Greenacre community school in Sefton, near Bootle in north-west England, said the lockdown had meant her nursery school lost income from fees for paid childcare it had previously been able to offer, while it also lost income from having few new children signed up for government-funded places during the pandemic. ....

Nursery Teachers Should Give Lessons on White Privilege, Says Guidance

Nursery Teachers Should Give Lessons on White Privilege, Says Guidance
Christopher Hope, The Telegraph, April 3, 2021
Playgroup teachers need an “understanding about white privilege” so toddlers can learn to “recognise racist behaviours and develop anti-racist views”, according to new guidance.
The new advice, drawn up as an alternative to the Government’s statutory guidance by representatives from unions and charities, said it was “time to challenge the widespread notion that ‘children do not see race’ and are colour blind to difference”.
It states that “children’s racial prejudice” is at risk of being “maintained or reinforced” unless teachers had specialist training to develop an “understanding about white privilege, systemic racism and how racism affects children and families in early years settings”. ....
