A Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus carrying between 10 to 20 passengers was hit by gunfire Thursday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Editor’s note: The following story appeared in The Florida Times-Union and Citizen on May 4, 1901. In the face of a conflagration literally appalling in its destruction that began in this city at 12:30 p.m. yesterday, it is yet, of course, impossible to state with accuracy the amount of loss or the insurance. The plans of the city, as prepared by the city surveyor, shows that 130 blocks were burned up and a part of one other block. The estimate of residences to the block in the residential district of the city is ten, and in the business section of the city the blocks were built solid.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Historical Society is hosting the Great Fire Run of 2021. The 5K and 1 Mile race, commemorating 120 years after Jacksonville’s Great Fire, will be held on Saturday, May 1. The event begins and ends at Old St. Andrew’s Church, 317 A. Philip Randolph Blvd., across from VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. The 5K will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 1 Mile Run at 8:30 a.m. To ensure safety during this time of pandemic, the wearing of masks will be required when not running the race, social distancing encouraged, and no post-race congregating.
