BEEP-S scheme: Over 27,000 farmers apply

This year’s BEEP-S scheme has a funding provision for €40 million. This is the second year of the BEEP-S scheme, and the third year overall of BEEP.
The scheme is designed to measure and record the live weight of calves at weaning as a percentage of the cow’s live weight.
Applicants to the scheme can also undertake a number of additional options targeting calf health and welfare.
These is: a measure for meal feeding or vaccination of weanlings; and a measure for faecal egg testing.
Under BEEP–S, participants may be eligible for up to €90 for the first 10 suckler cow/calf pairs per herd and up to €80/pair thereafter – subject to an overall maximum of 100 pairs/herd – if they carry put all options under the scheme. ....

Calls for Minister to open third BEEP Scheme


 
Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has been called on to reopen the third iteration of the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) Scheme.
The Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association (INHFA) said suckler farmers needed certainty that the funding secured for the sector in Budget 2021 would allow them to participate in the scheme.
The INHFA met with the Minister and his officials to discuss the issue, insisting that the scheme be opened without further delay.
INHFA president Colm O’Donnell pointed out that suckler cows with calves born since 1 July 2020 were ready for weaning and pairings of cows and calves needed to be weighed and meal fed pre-weaning. ....

Hailing from the county of Westmeath – Patrick Oxley is running a substantial organic farm consisting of both a suckler-to-beef and tillage enterprise.
The farm is composed of approximately 200ac, which is partly owned and rented. Patrick only began farming from scratch back in 2012 when he took over the family farm which had been leased out since 1999. Prior to that he had been working as a lorry driver and is a qualified electrician.
The farm’s conversion into an organic status began just five years ago when he made the decision to move away from a conventional farming system. ....
