Beef Focus: Cavan calf-to-beef farm gaining momentum

July 25, 2021, 6:00 am
During the week
Agriland paid a visit to an expanding calf-to-beef farm that is really gaining momentum, and this is little wonder when you meet someone with the
enthusiasm and positive attitude towards beef farming as the man at the helm, Charlie Smyth.
Farming 175ac near Killenkere, Co. Cavan, Charlie Smyth took the reigns of his family farm in 2019 when his parents Charles and Noleen stepped back from the beef enterprise.
They now run a free-range poultry unit on an outfarm consisting of 4,420 laying hens.

May 2, 2021, 6:00 am
In many of the commercial suckler herds in Ireland, there can be many breeds mixed through the cows when examining their recent ancestry.
However, in the suckler herd belonging to Jim Parkinson from Cahir in Co. Tipperary, the prominence of Limousin genetics is easily identified once you glance through the first few paddocks upon entering the farm.
For this week’s Beef Focus,
Agriland made the trip down to speak with Jim about how he manages his herd of cows across a 70ha farm.
Video of Jim’s farm
Farm overview
As previously mentioned, there is a 50-cow commercial suckler herd, mainly comprising Limousin breeding. The farm also hosts a 40 head herd of pedigree Limousin cows – under the ....

Beef Focus: Buying and finishing continental bullocks in Co. Galway

April 3, 2021, 6:00 am
On the outskirts of Headford, Tom Curran is a full-time farmer operating a store-to-beef system in Mausrevagh, Co. Galway, buying and finishing continental bullocks.
Tom buys in approximately 100 store bullocks annually, finishing continental bullocks both at grass during the summer, and houses the remaining steers for finishing over the winter period.
Agriland spoke with Tom about the current operation on the farm and got an insight into his approach to finishing these steers.
Tom Curran
System of Production
Tom’s farm resides over 100ac and, as previously mentioned, he currently buys in store bullocks with the aim of killing them at 26-30 months of age. The target is not to allow the bullocks to pass the 30-month-old bracket. ....
