'The Nevers' review: Period superpower epic that could do with a tighter focus

The Nevers, a new show about people with powers, is pretty far removed from garden-variety superhero fare.
Set in the late Victorian era, it is about people who, by the reckoning of the elite in such class-conscious times, should never have the kind of power they wield – let alone be seen wielding it.
Somehow, an unknown phenomenon in the year 1896 granted extraordinary ablities to a number of individuals, largely women and those on the fringes of society.
Like Marvel’s mutants and George RR Martin’s
Wild Cards, these “gifts” differ wildly from one person to the next, and sometimes they could hardly be regarded as such – bordering more on curses.

The Nevers Cast: Where You've Seen The HBO Actors Before

CinemaBlend
This weekend, HBO will introduce audiences to a new fantasy world with
The Nevers, the latest blockbuster series created by Joss Whedon (who left the show last year). Centered around "a group of Victorian women who discover unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a desire to change the world," as the logline notes,
The Nevers will be another genre-bending TV event, particularly with the adult-friendly paid cable company constantly on the search for their next
Game of Thrones. Certainly, if the show does well,
The Nevers could boost the profile of its notable cast, which includes Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, and Nick Frost. If you're wondering why this distinguished ensemble looks familiar, we're here to help. Here's where you've seen

Can The Nevers Evolve Beyond a Whedonesque Bag of Tricks?

The Nevers was to be Joss Whedon’s triumphant return to television, his first original series since 2010’s
Dollhouse. In the interim, of course, he made
The Avengers and co-created Marvel’s
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, but HBO Max’s new drama about female Victorian superheroes seemed to be a return to form for Whedon after nearly a decade entrenched in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what’s ironic is that
The Nevers, rather than being an original new act, feels like someone else playing around in Whedon’s IP: an Orphanage setting reminiscent of the Dollhouse, down to the same overseer in actress Olivia Williams; a grating antagonist spouting Drusilla’s rejected dialogue from

Laura Donnelly plays Amalia True

Who is Amalia? Amalia is described as the “most irresponsible, spontaneous, and psychologically broken hero of 19th-century London”, and represents a major threat to the British elite. She is absolutely committed to her cause, while she also enjoys a drink.
What else has Laura Donnelly been in? Northern Irish actor Donnelly has been seen in several popular TV shows including Outlander, Britannia and The Fall, while she’s also won significant acclaim for her stage career  – picking up a Best Actress Olivier Award for her turn in The Ferryman.

Combining two of television’s most popular themes of the moment - a period setting and superpowers - seems a risky proposition, but
The Nevers, several years in the making, has wrung something new from these tropes.

The Nevers review – Joss Whedon's messy supernatural Victorian series | Television

Despite the showrunner change and writing credits by Jane Espenson, Kevin Lau and Madhuri Shekar, Whedon’s fingerprints are all over The Nevers (as well as the first episode’s title credits as director, writer, creator and executive producer). The four episodes made available to critics bear the mark of a creator given infinite and inflated latitude, favoring lavish, indulgent sprawl over synthesis. The storylines balloon from an unexplained supernatural event that mark (mostly) women with strange, idiosyncratic talents to a forbidden sex club, a Jack the Ripper-style female serial killer, a deranged doctor’s cruel underground experiments, union strikes and the fate of the British empire, among other ideas. It’s unfortunate, given the female action hero premise, that such thematic dabbling is occasionally absorbing in isolation but, as a chaotic chorus, can’t muster the requisite charm to override the off-screen Whedon baggage.

Joss Whedon Practically Plagiarizes Himself in the Uneven The Nevers | TV/Streaming

totally plagiarize himself with the new HBO series “The Nevers,” but he comes pretty close. Whedon, who stepped down as writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner in November 2020, is no longer affiliated with “The Nevers,” but the first part of this first season unmistakably bears all his fingerprints. (Six episodes will begin airing on April 11, while the second four, delayed to COVID, will be available at a later date.) Women (mostly young, pretty) alternately tortured and empowered by supernatural abilities (given mysteriously, resented by men) come together to save the world (even though it’s a patriarchal cesspool). “The Nevers” is steampunk “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” with the Turned here as the Slayers and the Scooby Gang, and you don’t get closer to late-seasons Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, with her self-hating sexual choices and desire to abandon all responsibility, than the brawl-happy, pint-chugging Mrs. Amalia True (Laura Donnelly). None of this is to discredit the sprawling cast of “The Nevers,” who—particularly Donnelly—attempt to grasp mysterious, disparate, silly plot threads and bring them together into something sensible through the sheer charisma of their performances. It feels like Whedon’s fault that it rarely works.

Review: HBO's The Nevers struggles with the legacy of creator Joss Whedon

Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly are the heroes of the new HBO series The Nevers.
THE NEVERS (Joss Whedon, Philippa Goslett). Premieres Sunday (April 11) at 9 pm on Crave, with new episodes airing weekly. Rating:

The Nevers was to be Joss Whedon’s first television series since Dollhouse, and technically it still is: while the writer/director/producer departed the show last November, claiming exhaustion, principal photography for the first season had already been shot. Post-production was completed by Philippa Goslett, who replaced Whedon as showrunner in January… shortly before cast members of Whedon’s previous projects came forward with accusations of abusive behaviour dating back to Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

How disgraced creator Joss Whedon left his stamp on HBO's 'The Nevers'

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this article gave an incorrect debut date for "The Nevers."
“The Nevers,” an offbeat sci-fi series on HBO about Victorian women fighting against nefarious forces, is a Joss Whedon show.
That’s important to know at the outset, both creatively and culturally (and you’re not going to hear it from HBO). And that alone may be enough to turn some people away.
Whedon, who created shows including the brilliant “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the (hot take) overpraised “Firefly,” and directed some “Avengers” movies, has been accused of unprofessional behavior and creating an abusive work environment, both in his recent projects but also dating back to “Buffy.”
