While the country's love of gin continues to rise, with a plethora of new gins and gin events popping up all over the country, New Zealand is yet to grow its own berries at any scale for gin production, culinary use, or for export.
Gin imports topped $25m last year, but Kiwi gin distillers are winning many converts among local drinkers.
“There are very few juniper trees in New Zealand, not that many were brought to New Zealand,” Hort said. “For part of the project my colleagues in plant science will look at how to propagate these strains they have in their garden.
