A Russian court has ruled world champion kickboxer Alyaksey Kudzin can be extradited to his homeland, Belarus, despite concerns the athlete may be politically persecuted and tortured.
The decision by a Moscow appeals court on July 21 came despite an earlier European Court of Human Rights opinion that banned his extradition.
Kudzin, a mixed-martial-arts fighter nicknamed "The Brick," is wanted in Belarus on charges of assaulting a security officer during pro-democracy protests against strongman Alyaksandr Lukashenka after a disputed election in August 2020. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

UEFA defends decision to award event to Belarus after FIFPro criticism

UEFA defends decision to award event to Belarus after FIFPro criticism
Sunday, 9 May 2021
UEFA has defended its decision to award one of its events to Belarus amid criticism from the global players union.
European football's governing body has bucked the recent trend of moving major sports events out of the country amid the Government crackdown on protestors, including athletes, who have demonstrated against controversial President Alexander Lukashenko.
UEFA recently announced Belarus would stage the Women’s Under-19 European Championship in 2025 after it missed out on hosting the same event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Belarus had also been set to hold the Futsal Champions League Finals before UEFA moved the event from Minsk to Zadar in Croatia after citing coronavirus concerns.

World Players calls on Belarus to drop all charges against the BSSF

World Players calls on Belarus to drop all charges against the BSSF
04/28/21
The World Players Association today called upon the Belarussian authorities to drop all charges brought against Ms Aliaksandra Herasimenia, Chairwomen of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Fund (BSSF), and Mr Aliaksandr Apeikin, Executive Director of BSSF. World Players also urged global sports bodies, including the IOC, FIFA, IIHF and others, to exert sport’s undoubted influence to ensure the protection of Herasimenia and Apeikin for their courageous work as human rights defenders in the name of the BSSF.
World Players’ call follows the opening of bogus criminal cases by the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus against both human rights defenders. The cases deliberately misrepresent their successful advocacy for athlete rights and the removal of major sports events from Belarus due to the current human rights situation in the country, as ‘calls for actions aimed at causing harm to the national security’. The charges are punishable with up to five years imprisonment. Herasimenia and Apeikin have been placed on a wanted list, and their houses and places of other BSSF members have been searched.
