Hot Docs review: Mau - NOW Magazine

NOW Magazine By Kevin Ritchie NN Influential Canadian designer Bruce Mau’s super clean aesthetic gains new dimensions in a documentary portrait that takes too long to go from perfunctory to fascinating. The directors seriously backload the movie’s most interesting material: how Mau’s working-class upbringing in Sudbury shaped a worldview that would attract Coca-Cola and the Saudi Arabian government. Mau is mostly laudatory but occasionally gently critical, extolling his optimism and belief in design as an agent of social change via key projects. The final 20 minutes jarringly and viscerally reframe everything that comes before, while glossing over geopolitical developments that seemingly challenge Mau’s position that it’s possible to fix economic disparity with better design.
