Influential Canadian designer Bruce Mau’s super clean aesthetic gains new dimensions in a documentary portrait that takes too long to go from perfunctory to fascinating.
The directors seriously backload the movie’s most interesting material: how Mau’s working-class upbringing in Sudbury shaped a worldview that would attract Coca-Cola and the Saudi Arabian government. Mau is mostly laudatory but occasionally gently critical, extolling his optimism and belief in design as an agent of social change via key projects. The final 20 minutes jarringly and viscerally reframe everything that comes before, while glossing over geopolitical developments that seemingly challenge Mau’s position that it’s possible to fix economic disparity with better design.

The festival’s Special Presentations selection features world and international premieres, award winners from the recent international festival circuit and works by master filmmakers or featuring star subjects. The 2021 Hot Docs Festival will stream on the Hot Docs at Home VOD platform, available at hotdocs.ca, from April 29 – May 9.

In The Same Breath, Nanfu Wang s investigation into the origins of COVID-19, will play at the 2021 Hot Docs film festival.
Films on designer Bruce Mau, women in stand-up comedy and disgraced Nike track coach Alberto Salazar will screen at the 2021 Hot Docs film festival.
The titles are part of the latest round of films announced for the festival’s Special Presentations program.
In
Mau, Austrian directors Benji and Jono Bergmann profile the Ontario-born designer who has become an influential global figure whose work spans architecture, film, environmental design and more.
