SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A San Francisco Bay Area parking lot that sits on top of a sacred tribal shell mound dating back 5,700 years has been returned to the Ohlone people by the Berkeley City Council after a settlement with developers who own the land.
A Berkeley, California, parking lot, that was built over a sacred tribal shell has been returned to the Ohlone tribe. A commemorative park is planned to be built on the cultural site.
The 2.2-acre tract sits on top of a sacred tribal shell mound dating back 5,700 years.
The Berkeley City Council unanimously approved a plan to turn what is currently a parking lot atop a shell mound over to the Ohlone people.
