The Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for the messenger RNA vaccine
Hungarian Katalin Kariko and American Drew Weissman are being rewarded for their work that paved the way for the discovery of vaccines against Covid-19. They succeed Svante Pääbo, a Swedish biologist, winner of the same prize in 2022, for his work on the evolutionary history of humans. A Frenchman, Emmanuel Mignot, was also in the running for work on narcolepsy with the Japanese Masashi Yanagisawa. American biologists Stanislas Leibler and Michael Elowitz devoted their efforts to the design of synthetic genetic circuits.
