The on-going second wave of Covid-19 has taken many by surprise including the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The second wave has hit India so hard that beds in hospitals are hard to get, beds with oxygen are next to impossible and there is a huge shortage of vaccines. Importing these things seems to be the only option.
But, CBIC would levy both Customs Duty and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) on such imports thereby making the landed cost higher. After a bit of back and forth, CBIC responded. On April 20 and 24, it issued notifications exempting Customs Duty on import of Remdesivir, Beta Cyclodextrin, oxygen and vaccines. However, the threat of these imports attracting IGST remained. ....

The production capacity of remdesivir used for the treatment of COVID-19 has increased from 38 lakh vials per month to nearly 1.19 crore vials per month, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers said on Monday. Remdesivir is manufactured in India under voluntary licenses granted by Gilead Life Sciences to 7 pharmaceutical companies Cipla, Dr Reddy s, Hetero, Jubilant Pharma, Mylan, Syngene and Zydus Cadila, it added. ....

New Delhi [India], May 17 (ANI): With the sudden increase of cases during the second wave of the pandemic, the government has taken swift actions to enhance the availability of an anti-viral drug Remdesivir across the country. Presently, nearly 119 lakh vials of Remdesivir are being produced per month, the Department of Pharmaceuticals informed on Monday.
The department has, ever since, intensified the monitor on the availability, production and supply of Remdesivir. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of manufacturing sites of Remdesivir. ....

New Delhi : The production capacity of remdesivir used for the treatment of COVID-19 has increased from 38 lakh vials per month to nearly 1.19 crore vials per month, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers said on Monday.
