Wicked Local Held during the Spring 2020 Town Meeting after funding concerns arose due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Billerica Town Meeting members cast a collective yes vote to pass the long-planned Peggy Hannon-Rizza (PHR) Recreational Complex project. Article 15 was passed with 144 votes in favor of the project and 21 opposed. This approves funding to move forward in the amount of $5.4 million via the Community Preservation Committee (CPC), $2.6 million authorized through general obligation (GO) debt. It is intended that this GO debt will be rescinded and paid with free cash at future Town Meetings. According to the warrant, the remaining balance of $3 million would be paid with fiscal year 2021 free cash. ....
Finding success through virtual learning For Billerica grandmother Dina Favreau, taking on the role of remote learning supervisor for her9-year-old granddaughter Destiny Yancy, a fourth-grade student at the Hajjar Elementary School, has been one of the biggest changes of the pandemic. She said while it has been rewarding, the adjustment for Destiny was one of having to set aside the idea of the fun, traditional grandma, and see her in more of an authoritative role. A person who is there to care for her, but help make sure her work is done and virtual school runs as smoothly as possible. ....
Through social media, Curran s office and town employees thanked Billerica Public Health Nurse Christine West and Board of Health Principal Clerk Joanne White for the work they have put into combating and tracking the spread of the disease for the last year. Almost one year ago today the town of Billerica and the Billerica Public Schools met on COVID-19, Curran s office posted on Facebook Friday, Feb. 26. Since then Christine West and Joanne White have been constants in fighting the pandemic for the town. In March when most people went home Christine and Joanne buckled down and got to work.
