Binary black holes are believed to inevitably spiral together, but dark energy and the expanding universe could help them maintain a safe distance and mimic a single black hole.
The black hole is stealing material from a companion star, in a process that could show how black holes get a kick from supernova explosions that form them.
The discovery by astronomers could help us better understand how some black holes grow to such tremendous sizes.
Their findings were presented on March 12 in The Astrophysical Journal. The researchers believe this is the clearest case yet of a supermassive black hole on the move. And this is no easy task, according to the study's lead author, Dominic Pesce. He said: "We don't expect the majority of the supermassive black holes to be moving; they're usually content to just sit around.
