The document's publication triggers a 30-day wait period, at the end of which the agency's regional director will sign a Record of Decision selecting the option to be implemented.
"The buffalo took care of our elders and it's up to us to take care of the buffalo because they were almost wiped out," Larry Wright said. "We're just trying to bring them back."
This past fall, the park’s bison population was estimated at about 4,800 animals, up from an estimated 3,900 animals counted in the spring of 2023.
