The company began alerting some 50,000 people likely targeted by the firms accused of spying on activists, dissidents and journalists.
Meta said the threat actors posed as journalists from prominent organizations such as FOX News, human rights activists and film and TV producers.
The parent company of Facebook and Instagram says the firms used its platforms to spy on human rights activists, government critics, celebrities and journalists in more than 100 countries.
The companies targeted 50,000 users in 100 countries including journalists, dissidents, activists, politicians and clergy, Meta said.
