A 37 year old Sims woman pled out before Judge Molt in Wayne County Court Thursday. Carolyn Hatcher was originally arrested on a Class 3 Felony charge of Unlawful Possession of Meth back in February of this year. As per her plea deal, in exchange for her guilty admission, prosecutor Kevin Kakac dismissed a charge of Driving on a Suspended License Hatcher incurred while out on bail in August of this year. For her crime, Hatcher received only 2 years of probation. According to court documents, Hatcher was originally expected to pay upwards of $4,600 in fines and court costs. After being credited $400 for bond and 20 days at $30 per day worth of time served, plus a waiver of $2,215 court assessment, Hatcher will owe $1,400 in fines and court costs. EDWARDS CO. REAL ESTATE TAX BILLS DUE Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith is reminding Edwards County taxpayers that the first installment of the 2021 payable 2022 Real Estate Taxes are due today. This year's Tax extension amounts to $6,490,579.88. Payments may be made in person, by mail, or in the outside drop box. The box is located in front of the Cell Tower on the northeast side of the Courthouse (Sheriff's side). Anyone who uses the drop box should include a daytime phone number on their information. Those who wish to pay online using a credit or debit card may go to www.govtechtaxpro.com which will add a 2.5% fee that goes to the credit card company. The instructions are listed on the back of the tax bills on how to pay online. The second installment will be due Monday, November 28, 2022. The Fairfield City Council The Fairfield City Council met for their regular meeting last night with all members present. Although there were only 3 agenda items to be addressed, discussion on some of the items was lengthy. The council reviewed a proposed ordinance regarding the placement of storage containers on residential property. This issue was briefly discussed at the last meeting with City Attorney Darren Rice instructed to draft a proposed ordinance. Some of the stipulations that are being proposed in the ordinance are: Can't exceed 30% of the property or 320 sq. ft., whichever is less; Must be painted a monochrome color with no visible lettering or signage; Placed to minimize visibility from the street; May only be placed in areas zoned R1, R2, or R3; May be altered but must retain structural integrity; Must be 7' from a structure - Applies to storage containers only. In a bizarre chain of events, the Village of West Salem is without a mayor and is also down one board member. However, Fire Chief Harvey Fenton who was fired last week by Mayor Dan Baker was reinstated by the Village Board at a special meeting that had been called for 5pm Monday night by then Mayor Baker, prior to him resigning earlier Monday citing concerns over the safety of village employees. A crowd of 100 concerned citizens attended the meeting held at the firehouse due to the size of the crowd. Board member Jeff Bradham was elected by the board to serve as member in charge for Monday night's meeting. Bradham told the group that all OSHA requirements had been met and a release was sent October 11th just hours before the firing of Chief Fenton. The vote was unanimous to reinstate Fenton as Fire Chief, however when board member Misty Mewes was asked for her vote she resigned from the board. The Jefferson Fire Protection District announced a burn ban in effect from 10 a.m. Friday thru Tuesday, October 11. In accordance with the ordinance, the ban prohibits open burning within the fire district boundaries and includes the villages of Belle Rive, Bonnie, Dix, Ina, and all other areas within the boundaries of the fire district. Fire Chief Conan King says the district will continue to monitor weather conditions and may extend the burn ban as it feels necessary. The four Illinois Eastern Community Colleges are urging high school seniors to apply now for the next round of Student Success Scholarships, before the October 28th Priority Deadline, to ensure they are first in line for scholarship dollars. Initiated in 2020, the tuition awards are available to students within the IECC District who have committed to attend either of the four colleges by completing the admissions application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the Priority Deadline date.
