A revolution in reverse

A revolution in reverse
13 May 2021
On budget night, Australia witnessed another stunning performance of the Frydenberg tango: one step forward, two steps back.
After innumerable pre-budget “leaks”, the surprise up Josh Frydenberg’s sleeve was $29 billion in tax cuts for low and middle-income earners – doubtless a win for those who’d like to keep more of their money, but hardly the sweeping reforms required to make Australia’s economy more dynamic and less reliant on the exports that Paul Keating referred to in his infamous “banana republic” comments in 1986.
The rationale here (as it was in October) is that this budget was necessary to ensure the recovery and return of the economy to its pre-COVID state. As even the most disinterested observer of the pre-COVID economy would attest, that is not a desirable outcome – nor one that will necessarily be achieved by the budget. Stimulus measures and closed borders have already se ....

Budget a 'missed opportunity' for clean energy

Budget a ‘missed opportunity’ for clean energy

12 May 2021
The Morrison government’s failure to invest in clean energy and renewables in its 2021 budget has been labelled a disappointment by industry stakeholders.
The Clean Energy Council believes that a green recovery from COVID-19 could have delivered $50 billion of investment and more than 50,000 new jobs while revitalising economic activity in regional and rural communities, saying that the lack of investment is “disappointing”.
“Overall, (the Budget) represents a missed opportunity to utilise our country’s extraordinary renewable energy and energy storage potential to jumpstart Australia’s economic resurgence and leaves leadership in reducing Australia’s emissions and trajectory towards net-zero to the states and territories,” said CEC chief Kane Thornton.  ....

Electric vehicle strategy is a mess

Australia’s electric vehicle strategy is a mess
Australia lags the world in the adoption of electric vehicles, despite compelling arguments in favour of reducing carbon emissions and weaning the country off imported fuel.

Australia’s fragmented and dysfunctional approach to the introduction of electric vehicles is a source of enormous frustration for Nick Deeks, the managing director of quantity surveyors WT Australia.
Deeks, whose firm is involved in the costing of about 90 per cent of the country’s large scale infrastructure and construction projects, is staggered that no provision has been made for electric vehicle charging stations in any of the country’s major government-funded road projects. ....

Australia could kickstart another Roaring Twenties if it gets this budget right, a think tank argues

Australia could set itself up for a boom or bust. (George Rinhart, Corbis via Getty Images)
Australia could break away from a decade of stagnation if it focuses on genuine reform, according to think tank The Blueprint Institute.
Despite having a number of former Liberal MPs on its ‘strategic council’, the Institute advises the Morrison government to forget immediate budget repair, and instead prioritise economic growth.
Among its proposals are universal childcare, a green energy transition, tax reform, and a big investment in the arts and innovation sectors.
The Morrison government could set up Australia for a decade-long boom if it can see past the short-term constraints of politics. Miss the opportunity, though, and the country could suffer another lost decade. ....
